A visit to Domaine Carneros by Taittinger
I stopped by the grand Domaine Carneros Winery on a cool, bright February day and had a truly memorable experience. The 138 acre estate property was opened in 1989 and is a special spot along the California wine road. The château itself is a landmark; built in a classic 18th century style it is on a hill offering sweeping views of the surrounding vineyards. An outdoor terrace wraps around the main building.
The winery has built its reputation on its sparkling wines, and founding winemaker Eileen Crane shows a deft touch in crafting three traditional sparklers (Champagne) including a Brut, a Brut Rosé and a Blanc de Blancs. Click to read our tasting notes.
These wines are made in the traditional manner and undergo a secondary fermentation to produce their bubbles. All are vintage dated and age quite well.In December 2007, Domaine Carneros received organic certification of all its Estate vineyards by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF).
The Cheese Plate: Bellweather Carmody, Mad River Goat Roll, BrieThe gracious and knowledgeable staff offers a seated “wine flight” tasting for both the sparkling line as well as several very nice Pinot Noirs. A menu also offers wine by the glass or bottle along with caviar and artisan cheese plates matched to the wines. Tours are available from June to October. - JAS
