Rough & Ready , California , summer 2009—-Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP) is returning to Seattle and Portland in July. ZAP produces an enormously popular wine tasting event in San Francisco that annually draws thousands. This year they are also taking the show on the road, doing a more intimate version with the addition of a new twist — a BBQ competition.
Washington State has only a few producers of Zinfandel, while this grape flourishes in California and is considered “ America ‘s Heritage Wine.” “Northwest wine enthusiasts will have the rare opportunity to try over 100 Zinfandels from approximately 40 wineries,” explains ZAP’s Executive Director, Rebecca Robinson, “tasting Zinfandels from a wide variety of regions throughout California .”
ZAP will be bringing the wineries to the people so they can not only try the wines, but meet the winemakers and winery owners and learn why Zinfandel attracts such a great following!
ZAP is partnering with the wine club Seattle Uncorkedand South Seattle College ’s Culinary Arts Department to create a “BBQ Cook-off Competition.” Ten future chefs have been selected from the Culinary Arts program, each firing up a grill to create and serve a delicious BBQ appetizer designed to go with Zinfandel.
The public is invited to Zin & BBQ in the Park on Sunday, July 26th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. in The Gardens at South Seattle College ’s Arboretum, 6000 16th Avenue SW , Seattle (www.southseattle.edu). Tickets are $40 ($35 for ZAP members.) and can be purchased in advance at www.zinfandel.org A limited number of tickets may be available at the door.
The Portland event is set for July 29th from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the World Trade Center on SW Salmon Street.
