Nancy Silverton & Mario Batali's Pizzeria Mozza

By: JAS  On a recent LA swing I had a chance to stop by Pizzeria Mozza. I did have to battle my way in the front door and weave my way into a seat at the pizza bar, but was quickly into the buzz around me. Mozza was founded in 2007 by the superstar culinary trio of Nancy Silverton, Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich, and it’s a winner.

I started off with one of the best versions of Fried Squash Blossoms stuffed with fresh Ricotta ($12) I have had in some time. Golden, crisp, and oh so wonderful. Next up I enjoyed a top notch pizza pie done with Gorgonzola dolce, fingerling potatoes, radicchio & rosemary ($13) cooked in the wood fired oven. A nearly perfect thin crust with requisite char and blistering—yummy. This is a masterful dough that I’m told takes 36 hours to prepare. I felt transported to Tuscany. Also, try the well made Bone Marrow al forno ($12), also done in the wood oven. For dessert, the Butterscotch Budino ($8) is a must!

Great all Italian wine with a good-by-the glass list. Mozza does something I really like: their glass offering is really a small decanter containing a glass and a half, and it’s at the same price as a glass at most spots in town.

I found all the elements here to satisfy foodie bliss. A nice mix of creativity, vibe, vibrant flavors, and top notch ingredients handled with flair and simplicity. An OTV destination stop.

Also, now open is Mozza2Go with a take-out food section, gourmet market and more. Mozza is located just down the street from Paramount Studios on Melrose Avenue (just off Highland).
